This blue-winged teal drake is the classic circa 1915-1924 Mason Factory Challenge grade decoy made in Detroit, Michigan. The Challenge grade is a slightly flashy/racer looking decoy that is the grade above the standard grade, but just below a Premier.
This vintage decoy has average wear with some small worn sections. When viewed close-up and with caution, the bill shows a small ½ inch restoration piece that has been added to the bill tip. The rigging has been removed from this decoy, but the weight holes are still present. There is small split on the bottom with a few small lines, and a during construction hairline along the right side. There is a slightly raised knot on the back. The rear feathering is almost faded away, but trace lines can be seen. The neck has one small hairline confined mostly to one side, with a line running around the neck where the head is connected. There may be some restoration to the tail tip, extremely hard to tell. Overall length is 12. 5 inches.
This is an old gunning decoy that saw use, but still has a lot of character and collectibility. Mason Challenge Grade decoys are considered by many to be among the most desirable with the blue-winged species less often seen.
