This, unknown carver to me, Chesapeake Bay/ Susquehanna River basin Canvasback drake has many of the construction and style details known to some of the regions other, better known carvers. I think paramount to finding the maker, the carving in the chest area and beak/head hold the key.
He does have an old crack in the neck, as seen in this left side view. The paint is likely an old repaint but it is hard to tell. The pattern on the back and head appear well aged with a faded patina. You can see old rig holes in the bottom that have been both painted over long ago, and newer ones from years ago. This may be a fairly old deck hand dek dating to maybe the 1940-50s.
The overall length of the decoy from the tip of the beak to the tail is about 16 inches. Just the body length is about 13 1/2 inches by approx 7 inches wide across the back.
The nice appealling paint on the body and head makes this a very attractive working decoy that will look nice on the gun room shelf.
